World No. 3 Kong Linghui of China will very likely become the king of Asian table tennis if he repeats his Asian Games team final win over South Korean Kim Taek Soo in the singles semifinals.

Kong was drawn into the second half with the world 11th-ranked South Korean, who lost to the Chinese in straight sets in the team final Saturday, while dual Olympic gold medalist Liu Guoliang of China topped the first half of the draw.

If competition goes as seeding, 1995 world champion and World Cup winner Kong will take on current World Cup runner-up Kim in the semifinals. The Chinese has better chance to make the final. Liu, ranked second in the world, will very likely meet Japanese Iseki Seiko in the semifinals.

Japan, China Both Claimed They Won Asian Games Swimming

Japanese swimming team leader Tsuyoshi Aoli claimed they won the Asian Games swimming by beating China for the first time since the 1990 Games.

But Chinese head coach Zhang Xiong said China was the eventual winner in the water despite taking 13 golds against Japan's 15.

"Chinese swimmers broke seven Games marks while Japanese only four. I think we are the winners in swimming," said Zhang. The mere medal tally is not sufficient to decide who is the No. 1 Asian power in the sport," the Chinese coach said. "The Chinese team was depleted by the absence of star swimmers while Japan sent most of its best swimmers here."

Aoli said the Japanese victory in swimming boosted its chance and morale to win a gold medal in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
