Agent Contacts Chinese Athlete in Failed Bribery Attempt

An agent had contacted a Chinese table tennis player in a bribery attempt which the Chinese rejected categorically, a top official of the Olympic Council of Asia told Xinhua Thursday afternoon.

"An agent who speaks Chinese approached a Chinese table tennis player, trying to buy a match with a certain amount of U.S. dollars. The agent didn't specify how much," said Wei Jizhong, chairman of OCA's Sports Committee.

"The Chinese athlete refused clearly the offer, saying he or she competes under OCA spirit and the Bangkok Asian Games motto," Wei said.

"The Chinese athlete reported to Chef de Mission about this. The chief immediately asked he or she to remember the face of the agent in order to catch him. Unfortunately they failed to do it, the agent disappeared after the refusal," the OCA official added.

Wei said he would submit a report on the bribery attempt to Mr. Muttaleb Ahmad, Director General of OCA.

A Chinese athlete has rebuffed a bribery attempt from an unidentified person who asked the Chinese to throw a final in exchange for money, a Chinese sports official said early in the day.
