More than 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials have been registered by the orginizing committee of the 13th Asian Games in Bangkok. "The number of athletes, coaches and officials has reached 10,629, surpassing the pre-Asiad figure of 10,000 expected by the organizers," said Wei Jizhong, chairman of the sports committee of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). A total of 68,667 identification cards have been issued by the Bangkok organizers, including 4,247 for honored guests classcified from A to D, said the OCA executive member on Friday. The organizers also witnessed the inflow of 6,919 media members including reporters, photographers and crew members for the quadrennial sports meet. Up till Friday, a total of 31,404 services have been provided by the organizers with the number of sponsors reached to 2,075. Eighty-eight OCA officials, together with 213 NOC members, have attended the competitions in Bangkok, the official said. Four years ago, some 7,000 athletes, coaches and officials from 42 OCA members attended the Hiroshima Asian Games. Back to the Top |

A Kuwaiti has become the second weightlifter to test positive for banned drugs at the Asian Games, officials said Friday. Jaber Al-Ajmi has tested positive for nandrolone, a banned anabolic steroid, said a senior Olympic Council of Asia who declined to be named. "I hope we don't have any more in future," said OCA president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah. "I am very happy that there have been only two cases, not involving champions," he added. Al-Ajmi was tested at random December 14 after finishing 10th in the over 105-kilogram class. Earlier, Jordanian weightlifter Ayed Khawaldeh tested positive for the banned substance triamterene. Several athletes were kicked out of their national teams for testing positive for banned drugs before the Games began. Asia's fastest man Koji Ito claimed his third gold medal at the Asian Games as he stormed to victory in the men's 200 meters on Friday. Koji, who holds the 200m Asian record of 20.16 seconds, clocked 20.25 to take the gold, followed by China's Han Chaoming in 20.70 and Sri Lanka's R. Tillekeratne in 20.93. Gao Bingrong and Liu Jian of China won the title of the men's lightweight double sculls at the 13th Asian Games at Pattaya on Friday. The Chinese pair was timed at 6:24.04, followed by Kazuaki Mimoto and Daisaku Takeda of Japan in the second place at 6:26.55. China clean swept Friday's five gold medals on offer at the Asiad rowing competitions at Pattaya. Fan Ruihua, Liu Bill, Peng Ying and Shen Senping teamed up to win the women's lightweight coxswainless eight-oars title to seal the perfect victory for China. Defending champions China and Asian Championship winners South Korea both entered Saturday's final after winning their semifinals of the men's basketball at the 13th Asian Games on Friday. China, seeking their fourth concecutive and fifth total titles in the Asain Games, defeated the Philippines 82-73 while South Korea overwhelmed quarterfinal "dark horse" Kazakhstan in a one-sided victory of 101-64. China had its five-time consecutive Asian Championship title run snapped in an unexpected semifinal defeat to South Korea last September and has been waiting for the Bangkok Games as revange chance for the passed 14 monuthes. Japan outbeat China in the second half to score a 93-69 victory for the women's basketball gold medal at the Asian Games on Friday. Nagata Mutsuko hit the game-high 23 points while teammates Shimada Chisako added 20 and Oyama Taeko 18 for Japan, for whom the Bangkok gold is just their second title as the women's basketball was introduced to the Asian Games in 1974.
