Senators seek Blumenthal perjury probe

WASHINGTON - Several Democratic and Republican senators are asking the Justice Department to investigate whether White House aide Sidney Blumenthal committed perury by denying he spread the story that Monica Lewinsky was a stalker. Journalist Christopher Hitchens said Sunday that Blumenthal told him and other reporters about the former intern stalking President Clinton. In testimony at the Senate impeachment trial and to prosecutor Ken Starr's grand jury, Blumenthal denied passing to the news media Clinton's assertion to Blumenthal that Lewinsky made sexual demands. Responding to Hitchens, Blumenthal issued a statement Sunday that focused on a part of his testimony in which he said he spoke of Lewinsky to ''friends.'' That category, the statement said, included Hitchens. (by USATODAY.COM on Febuary 7)
