PEOPLE'S DAILY
The People's Daily has been the most authoritative newspaper in China ever since its first publication in June 1948. With a current circulation of three million and a comprehensive coverage of the Chinese government's latest policies, the Daily ranks sixth on UNESCO's list of the world's Big Ten newspapers.
Based in Beijing, the newspaper has established 70 correspondent bureaus (37 domestic ones and 33 overseas) and two offices in Hong Kong and Macao. The People's Daily sends its contents via satellites to printing points, both domestic and international, to ensure efficient distribution around the world.
The People's Daily also boasts of a variety of affiliated domestic publications, including an economic newspaper Market Daily, the weekly Global Times, Newsfront, a magazine of journalism, a literal monthly Da Di and an investigative domestic news monthly Time and Tide.
The Overseas Edition of the People's Daily was launched in July 1985 and aimed at updating the overseas Chinese on China's latest development. The edition has since then registered a rapid growth in its circulation in Europe, North America as well as Hong Kong and Macao. At present the Edition is printed and distributed overseas in Hong Kong, Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, Paris and Toronto.
The People's Daily also broke through its network technology and launched its own electronic newspaper, People's Daily Online, onto the Internet on January 1,1997. By the end of the same year PD Online had developed into the biggest Chinese web-site on the Internet with 12 million hits per month. The online newspaper updates its information nine times each day to present the readers with the latest issues of the People's Daily and all its affiliated newspapers and magazines. PD Online also serves as a database for readers to surf any report or essay on PD in the past years. In January 1998, P.D Online came up with its first English outline version, furnishing its foreign visitors with the most updated leading stories in English.
